프람프트 프로젝트는 2023년 6월 28일부터 7월 30일까지 허유 작가의 개인전< AWE OF EXISTENCE >을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 2023년 신작을 선보이는 자리로 프람프트 프로젝트에서 지금까지 선보이지 않았던 새로운 색감과 형태의 작업들을 감상할 수 있다. 비단에 보일 듯 말 듯 옅은 레이어로 쌓인 원과 선형의 형태들은 작가 작업에서 보이는 큰 특징이다. 과거의 작업들과 비교해서 작업의 형식과 표현 기법은 크게 변하지 않았으나 새롭게 시도한 선형 작업들 과 색감 그리고 구성 방식의 변화는 작가의 작업에서 내적으로나 외적으로 큰 변화이자 시도이다.

시각적으로 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 색감의 변화이다. 초기의 작업이 동양화에서 말하는 현색과 같은 깊이의 색이다면 점차 푸른 계열이 되고 최근 작업에서는 다양한 색감의 작업들을 볼 수 있다. 사실 현색으로 보였던 미지의 색은 지금의 다채로운 색들이 레이어로 쌓여 있던 것이고 그 이후 점차 탈피하여 각각의 존재로서 다양한 색감들이 드러난 것이라 할 수 있다. 여리한 옅은 색감의 원들은 하나하나 가까이서 보면 존재감을 보이며 각자 만의 빛을 영롱하게 내뿜고 있다. 원이 모이고 모여 레이어를 이루며 마치 움직이는 듯한 착시가 느껴지기도 하고, 서로 겹쳐지며 또 다른 운동성과 함께 생명력을 보여준다. 레이어 속 원들은 미미해 보이지만 각자의 존재감을 내뿜으며 저마다 역할을 다하는 것이다. 작가는 하나의 원, 그리고 선을 표현할 때마다 일정 한 손목의 스냅을 이용하는데 이는 마치 새 생명을 부여하는 듯 보인다.

허유는 “극도로 미묘한 것들이 때로는 내 삶을 집어삼킨다”라고 말한다. 이는 살아가는 데 있어 미묘한 것들이 결코 절대 미미하거나 사소하지 않음을 말하는 것이다. 그것들이 오히려 삶을 집어삼킬 만큼 강할 수 있다는 것인데, 작가는 각각의 원들이 보여주는 생명력을 통해 그 메시지를 전달하고 있다. 중요하지 않아 무시되거나 별것 아닌 것으로 치부되는 것들에 대한 가치에 대해 사람들이 알아봐 주기를 바라는 마음, 그것은 비단 감정이나 가치의 문제를 넘어 사회적 문화적 소수와도 연결될 수 있다고 말한다. 과거의 작업들은 작가가 이러한 생각을 누군가에게 외치려고만 했던 순간들이라면, 이번 전시에서 새롭게 보여주는 작업들은 살아있음 그 자체를 긍정하고 무언가를 깨서 오는 변화가 아닌 채워야 오는 것이라는 생각의 전환을 보여주는 작업의 터닝 포인트라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

전시장 공간 벽면을 하나의 화폭으로 자유롭게 움직이는 원과 선형들은 마치 부유하는 것처럼 생명력을 강하게 보여주고 있다. 천천히 그리고 평소에 쓰지 않았던 감각을 이용해 한없이 여리한 색감의 레이어들 그리고 공간에서 느껴지는 살아있음을 느껴 보길 바란다. 허유는 이번 전시를 통해 우리가 살아있음 그 자체가 소중하고 아름다운 순간이라는 것을 잠시나마 생각해 보며 모든 존재는 그 자체로 경이롭다는 것, 그리고 삶의 주체로서 그 사실을 경험할 수 있기를 바라는 것이 아닐까.

Prompt Project presents a solo exhibition by artist Heo Yu titled Awe of Existence from June 28 to July 30, 2023. This exhibition, curated as a special showing of new works created in 2023, will be an opportunity for the viewers to appreciate new colors and forms that were not introduced at Prompt Project before. Barely visibly layered circles and linear forms on silk is the main characteristic of the artist’s work. Compared to previous works, the working technique and expression skills have not changed dramatically, but the newly attempted linear forms and colors as well as altered composition methods are a big change and attempt, both internally and externally.

Visually, the most eye-catching change is color. While previous works were oriental painting with the color depth of hyeonsaek (oriental black ink), the color gradually changed to blue tones with her newest works showing a wide variety of colors. The unknown color which looked like hyeonsaek was actually various colors that were present and layered to later on appear as individual different colors as they shed. When looked closely, each soft and pale colored circle shows its own individual existence and all emit their brilliant light. Circles gather one by one to form a layer and give the illusion of movement, and also overlap to show a different kind of motility with liveliness. Circles inside the layers may look trivial, but each burst their own individuality to fully fulfill their role. Each time the artist expresses a circle or a line, she snaps her wrist in a consistent way, which appears as if she is giving life to the painting.

Heo Yu says, “Extremely subtle things sometimes eat up my life.” It means that in life, subtle things are never insignificant or trivial. In contrast, those things are strong enough to eat up your life, and the artist is trying to convey this message through the liveliness that the individual circles are showing. She hopes that people will recognize the value of things that are ignored or considered as negligible because they are not important, and go beyond the problem of emotion or worthiness of silk to connect with social and cultural minorities. If past works were moments when the artist was only trying to yell this thought to someone, her new works in this exhibition affirm her existence itself and is perhaps a turning point in her work which shows her transformation of thought: change comes from not destroying something, but by filling up.

The circles and linear forms that move freely against a backdrop of canvas on the exhibition walls display strong liveliness as if they are floating. I hope our viewers will be able to feel the pale colored layers and vitality of the space slowly, with senses they normally don’t use. Perhaps artist Heo Yu wishes that viewers, as the subjects of their lives, will be able to experience and think that existence itself is a precious and beautiful moment, and all existences are wonderful in and of themselves.
