프람프트 프로젝트는 2023년 8월 12일부터 8월 27일까지 독립 기획자 이지현의 프로젝트 전시로 <벽과 만나는 일>을 개최한다. 참여 작가는 나난, 송채림, 양하, 장시재, 최민혜 작가 5인으로 구성되며 기존 화이트 큐브의 상식을 깨는 흥미로운 설치 방식과 더불어 참신한 기획을 선보일 예정이다.
작품이라 명명할 수 있는 모든 것들의 최초의 모습은 완벽하다. 작가의 머릿 속에서 말이다. 하지만 그것이 감각할 수 있는 형태로 세상에 나올 무렵에는 꽤 다른 모습을 가지게 된다. 작가는 그것을 예측했다 말하기도 하고, 예측하지 못했지만 그 또한 작품의 숙명이라 여기며 탄생을 맞이하게 된다.
탄생을 맞이한 셀 수 없이 많은 작품이 있다. 안타깝게도 모든 작품이 축복받지는 못하지만 말이다. 내가 만난 작가들은 종종 말한다. 작업실 밖을 나가지 않는 작품은, 혹은 작업실을 나갔다가 되돌아오는 작품은 사실 ‘짐’같다고. 그 솔직한 발언 앞에서 나는 치열한 생각에 잠긴다.
작품은 언제쯤 벽과 만나게 될까. 주제와 서사를 가지고 큐레이팅이라는 정제된 문법 아래 펼쳐지는 무대와 같은 벽도 있지만 공간을 구분짓기 위해 바닥에서 수직으로 솟아난, 오직 본연의 기능에 충실한 벽도 있다. 이 건조한 벽이 때때로 수집가에 의해 작품과 만난다. 수집가의 진열 방식은 용감하다. 지극히 개인적이다. 큐레이터는 선택하지 않을 결정을 내린다. 그것은 무모함보다는 되려 순수함에 가깝다.
수집이란 동시에 무언가를 배제하는 일이자 수집하는 대상에 가치를 부여하는 일이며 아름다움을 기억하겠다는 의지이기도 하다. 이번 전시는 벽을 넘고, 벽을 깨며 탄생한 작품이 다시 벽과 만나 일에 관한 이야기이다.
Prompt Project is pleased to present Encountering the Wall, a project exhibition curated by independent curator Ji Hyeon Lee, from August 12th to 27th, 2023. The presentation will feature five artists—Nanan, Song Chae Rim, Yang Ha, Sijae Jang, and Minhye Choi—who will showcase interesting and innovative installations that challenge the traditional notion of the white cube.
Inside the artist’s mind, the initial idea of any artwork is perfect. However, by the time the work is realized into a tangible form, it often adopts a relatively different image. Sometimes, the artist refers to this transformation as being predicted; at other times, the artist accepts it as the unpredictable fate of the artwork and embraces the work nonetheless.
While numerous works are born into the world, unfortunately, not all are blessed. Artists I have met have sometimes mentioned how a work that has not left the studio, or that has left only to be returned, feels like a “burden.” This candid remark left me deeply absorbed in thought.
When will an artwork encounter its wall? While there are staged walls that are presented along specific themes and narratives following well-refined curation, there are also walls that sprout vertically from the ground, loyal to their original function—dividing the space. At times, this wall may welcome artwork with the help of a collector. A collector is brave when displaying artwork. Therefore, the display tends to capture personal style. A collector makes decisions that a curator would not. This act is innocent rather than reckless.
Collecting is an act of excluding something while simultaneously giving value to the collected object; it also reflects a determination to commemorate its beauty. This exhibition is a story about works that were born by overcoming and breaking through the wall, only to encounter it again.
