Prompt Project is pleased to present a solo exhibition <Enfolding the air> by artist Hong Seong Joon from May 3rd to June 11th, 2023. Artist Hong Seong Joon’s creative process begins with the pondering and questioning of ‘layers,’ in which the artist finds the answer to his endless questions and thoughts on painting, image, and work attitude. This exhibition concentrates on the in- depth showing of the beginning and end of the Layers series which the artist has been focusing on until present inside the unique exhibition space of PPP Gallery. The artworks are exhibited in three unique spaces with a different characteristic on each floor. We hope they will spark the curiosity and understanding of the artist’s world for our viewers.

The basement floor consists mainly of works that show Hong’s pondering on materiality. Study Layer 72, which is mostly composed of simple monotone colors, is apt for showing the artist’s attitude toward paintings and is the beginning point of this exhibition’s Layers series. Hong’s simple thought on coldness is equivalent to metal materials such as stainless, silver, etc. In contrast, warmth is equivalent to analogue materials such as painting, leather, fabric, etc. Both types of materials coexist in one frame to show the viewers his thoughts and attitude on the materiality.

Continuing on the second floor, Silver Layer, Color Plane Light Layer, and installations are on view for admiration of surface textures and tactility that can only be felt from paintings. Tree and aluminum cast acts as supportive elements, canvas fabric acts as the background which covers the outside surface, and leather and various materials added at the final stage all show the endless agony which the artist has felt during the making process. At the end, the artist wants to show through a series of processes, the progress by which he has overcome problems, his research on materials, work sequences, and even the making process. As such, the focus in the planning of this exhibition at PPP Gallery was mainly two parts: storytelling through the continuation of the stairs and artworks in the void area. Hong’s work process and inner side seem to be projected on the repeated layering of subtly-showing layered hanji on a base body. The subject and the luminous feeling—reflected by the natural light which comes through the window and seen together with the tactility of the actual surface—are the main characteristics which can only be seen in Hong Seong Joon’s work process. They are also the point of appreciation in the exhibition.

If the basement floor and second floor were an appreciation of the Layers series without landscape concentrating on the inner side, then on the third floor, viewers can see layered works that are combined with landscapes. These works speak of the formal origin of paintings through landscapes while simultaneously showing the artist’s interest on the temporality between the overlapping layers. The visual invitation expressed in airbrush seems like a photograph, but it is a witty expression of Hong’s thought on surface textures and tactility that only paintings can convey. After all, the artist has been researching on the ‘layer’ of layers and has been agonizing about what kind of emotion the viewer will feel about ‘the outer shell’ (as the artist refers to) which appears as materiality on the top layer. Hence, concentrating on this point, he is focusing on pictorial expression, and his agony about painting deepens and deepens as he continues making works. We are excited to see how his desire to express everything in ‘layers’ will shape his future layer works. We hope that through this PPP exhibition, artist Hong Seong Joon‘s sincere thoughts about the origin of painting through endless agony and questioning will be conveyed to our viewers.
