PROMPT PROJECT는 중견작가 신혜림, 윤종주, 이정배의 3인전을 진행한다. 오랜 기간 서로 다른 매체로 꾸준히 작업해온 세 명의 작가는 ‘선, 색면, 동시대의 변형된 산수’라는 다른 키워드를 갖고 있지만 그 안에 쌓인 내공과 작업 과정들은 따로, 또 같이 조명할 만하다.

이들은 간단한 조형요소처럼 보이는 선, 색면, 오브제를 독자적으로 실험하며 끝없는 반복의 과정을 거쳐 지금껏 탄탄한 작품세계를 구축해왔다. 세 작가의 작품 속에는 손끝에서 탄생한 시간성 그리고 겹겹의 레이어가 숨겨져 있다. 신혜림, 윤종주, 이정배 작가의 작업의 인고가 담긴 숨겨진 흔적들을 작품을 감상하며 함께 느낄 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다.

신혜림 작가는 장신구와 평면 작업을 병행해 왔다. 작가에게 선은 작품 자체이며 중요한 상징적 수단이다. 오랜 기간 다양한 종류의 선으로 작업해 왔으며 사용 방식도 변화해왔다. 선을 감고 쌓는 끊임없는 반복적인 행위를 통해 작품을 만들어가며 이러한 반복성을 통해 시간성을 표현한다. 작가 특유의 기법인 반복 구성은 흐름과 순환의 연속이며, 매 순간의 과정은 작가로 하여금 물성과의 대화를 유도한다. 최근 작업들은 선재의 시각적 변주가 확장된 크기로 구현됨으로써 공간에서 새로운 생동감을 보여준다. 작가의 손끝에서 이어져 작품이 완성되기까지 보여지는 과정은 그 자체로 다시 기록의 시작이고 여정이다.

윤종주 작가의 작품은 색면으로 되어있다. 작가는 캔버스 위에 액상의 물감을 부어 재료의 유동성을 활용하여 작가만의 깊이 있는 표면을 만들어 낸다. 캔버스에 색면의 레이어가 쌓이면서 미묘하게 빛깔이 달라지고 깊이가 생긴다. 작가의 반복적인 행위는 작품에서 시간성을 보여준다. 색면의 레이어가 쌓이고 모서리의 물감을 닦아내며 경계가 생긴다. 최근 작업에서 그라데이션과 수많은 층위의 색들을 통해 빛과 선을 더하였고 한층 더 깊이 있는 색면을 보여주고 있다. 그 자체로 깊이 있어진 색면은 작가가 쌓은 레이어들의 시간을 고스란히 담아내고 있다.

이정배 작가는 산수화의 동시대성에 대해 끊임없이 고찰하고 다양한 매체를 이용해 실험해오고 있다. 도심 속에서 우리가 마주할 수 있는 자연 풍경 가운데 인간에 욕망에 의해 사유화된 자연에 대해 작업한다. 작가는 2016년 “부분이 된 전체” 시리즈 작업을 처음 선보인다. 자본에 의해 잠식되고 본연의 의미가 잊혀져 가는 분절된 풍경의 이미지를 오브제로 옮겨 새롭게 색을 만들고 수백 번의 도장 과정을 거쳐 작가만의 조각난 자연경관을 작품으로 보여준다. 조각난 자연들은 작가가 만들어낸 새로운 색감의 기하학적 풍경으로 재탄생한다. 입체적이지만 회화와 귀결되는 분절된 자연 풍경들은 동시대 산수화의 새롭고 독창적인 모습을 보여준다.

Prompt Project is presenting a three-artist exhibition with established artists Shin Hyerim, Youn Jongju, and Lee Jeongbae. Although the three artists who have each continuously worked in different mediums for a long time have different keywords such as ‘line, color-field, and transformed landscape of current period’, the inner strengths and work processes that they have accumulated over time are worth highlighting separately as well as together.

They have individually experimented with line, color fields and objects that look like simple formative elements and have established a sound world of art through endless repetition. Inside the works of the three artists, numerous layers of timeliness that have been born from the fingertips are hidden. We hope it will be a chance for our viewers to admire and experience together the hidden traces of the persevering work process that is filled in the works of artists Shin Hyerim, Youn Jongju, and Lee Jeongbae.

Artist Shin Hyerim has simultaneously worked on jewelry and two-dimensional works. To the artist, line is itself an artwork and an important symbolic element. She has worked with various types of lines over a long time and its usage has also changed over time. She has created her works through the method of endlessly coiling and layering lines, and has shown the timeliness through this repetitious act. Repetitive composition, the artist’s unique method, is a series of flow and cycle, and every moment of the process leads to her dialogue with the property matter. Recent works show a new vitality in the space by implementing the visual variation of wire rods in an expanded size. The process in which the artwork was completed at her fingertips is itself the beginning of a record and a journey.

Artist Youn Jongju’s works consist of color fields. The artist pours aquarelle on the canvas and utilizes the liquidity of the material to create her unique deep surface. As color plates are layered, the color changes slightly and depth is created. The artist’s repetitive action shows timeliness in the work. As the colors are layered and paints in the corners are wiped off, boundaries are formed. In recent works she has added light and line through gradation and numerous levels of colors for an even deeper color field. The deepened color field itself is filled with layers of time the artist has spent.

Artist Lee Jeongbae has endlessly contemplated on the contemporariness of landscape and experimented with various mediums. His works deal with the privation of natural landscapes that we come across due to greediness of humans. The artist showed ‘The Whole That becomes a Fraction’ series for the first time in 2016. He transformed images of fragmented nature, whose true meaning is being forgotten due to impaired capital, into objets; the objets are added with color and after hundreds of coating processes, the artist presents his unique fragmented nature scenery. The broken pieces of nature are reborn as a newly colored geometric landscape by the artist. Although three-dimensional, the fragmented natural landscapes look like paintings that show contemporary landscape in a new and characteristic form.
